Start of the 2022-23 Winnipeg Ice Season

During the warmup of the Winnipeg Ice home opener, the Ice players wore orange jerseys to do their part to remind all about residential schools and how they have impacted Indigenous Peoples.
The Orange Jersey Project is coordinated by Jeremy Boston who attended Canada’s last operating residential school - St. Michaels’s in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan.
We are honoured to help Jeremy share the message and spirit of Every Child Matters through the shared love of Sports.

Second year player, Haley Braun scored the Ice’s first goal of the season by going short side on the yellowhead goaltender. She later added two assists, including one on Ava Bergman’s game winner with less than 2 minutes to play in the game.
Game was a back forth affair with the Ice outlasting Yellowhead 5-4 for their first victory of the MFHLU18 season.
Other goal scorers where rookies Izzy Mann, and Selene Wozney, along with Alycia Ross.
Jordyn Nepinak-Sargent earned the win by stopping 28 of the 32 shots she faced.

ICE Advance to Championship Finals!

The Winnipeg ICE defeated the Winnipeg Avros in 5 games to book their ticket to the MFHL U18 Championship Finals!

After a thrilling 5-3 game 5 victory, the ICE will now take on the Wildcats in the championship series.

This is the second time the ICE have made it to the finals in program history (prev. 2019-2020). In the 2019/20 season, the finals were abruptly cancelled due to the covid pandemic, with both the Avros and ICE being declared co-winners. This season, only 1 team will come out on top as the ICE battle the Westman Wildcats for the trophy.

ICE Advance to Semi-Finals!

The Winnipeg ICE won three straight in the best of 5 series to clinch their spot in the semis.

Battling the Hawks in round 1, the ICE would come out to an impressive start, winning 6-1 on home ice to lead the series 1-0. Braun (2), Bergman, Ross, Staples & Hilderman would all find the back of the net with Melizza making 27 saves on the day.

Game 2 would see the ICE travelling to Morden as they battle against a tough Hawks team, ultimately skating to a 5-3 win. Ehmann (3) and Bergman (2) would be the lone goal-scorers for the ICE with Nepinak-Sargent making 25 saves to secure the win.

Heading into game 3, the ICE led the series 2 games to 0, only needed 1 more win to secure the series. The Hawks would come out flying, going up 2-0 after the first. Bergman would score a short-handed goal in the 2nd period to put the ICE within 1. With 10 minutes left in the third and the Hawks leading 2-1, Hilderman would find the back of the net off a faceoff to tie the game at 2. Heading to OT, Farmer secured the win and the series for the ICE, with a top shelf goal just 6 minutes into OT. Melizza made 39 saves to help lead the team to victory.

The ICE will now face the #1 Avros in the Semis!

ICE head into Playoffs

The Winnipeg ICE finished their season on Feb 13th with a 3-1 loss to the Hawks. Finishing the season with a 15-10-3 record was strong enough to have the ICE secure 4th place in the standings.

With a 4th place finish, the ICE will now face off against the Pembina Valley Hawks in the first round of the MFHL U18 Playoffs. This best of 5 series sees the ICE take home ice advantage for games 1,3, & 5.

Playoff Matchup:

The ICE and Hawks first met this season back in early October, with the game heading to a shootout. Hawks would seal the win (3-2 SO)  with Ehmann and Jacob netting the goals for the ICE.

The second of four matchups wouldn't come again till late January where the ICE would skate to a 4-0 win. Ehmann, Carnegie, Staples, & Bergman with the goals.

Shortly after, the ICE would once again take the W with a 5-2 win over the hawks. Maternick(2), Ross, Farmer, & Jacob would all net the goals for the ICE.

The final matchup of the regular season, would see the Hawks win 3-1. Jacob was the lone goal-scorer for the ICE.

Splitting the regular season series at 2 games a piece, the first round matchup is set to be a good one!

ICE Fall to Wildcats in Semi-Finals

The Winnipeg ICE battled the Westman Wildcats in the MFMHL Semi-Finals.

After dropping game 1 by a score of 3-1, the ICE were looking for redemption in game 2. Coming out of the gate flying, the ICE outshot the Wildcats by 38-24, but weren't able to capitalize on their chances, with regulation ending in a 2 all tie. Continuing to put on the pressure, the ICE once again outshot their opponent 7-3 in OT. With the Westman goaltender shutting us down, the Wildcats jumped on their chances as they were rewarded a powerplay within the dying minute in OT. Firing a shot bar down, the Wildcats came out on top, winning the game and leading the series 2-0.

Despite an even matched third game, the Wildcats once again capitalized on their chances, defeating the ICE by a score of 5-2 and putting a stop to the Winnipeg ICE season.

Starting the season with a 2-7 record, the ICE showed incredible work ethic and dedication to the team as they improved substantially, ending the Regular season in fourth place, to host the defending Provincial Champions in the first round. Knocking out the defending champs in three straight games, the ICE moved on to the top seeded team were they fell short, however, an incredible accomplishment to their season none the less.

The ICE say goodbye to three graduating players, Seren Jocelyn, Deena Scanlon, and Maggie Medock as their MFMHL days come to an end. The ICE players, coaches, parents, and fans, can't thank these three girls enough as they set the bar high for the years to come. All 3 girls showed incredible leadership throughout the year, both on, and more importantly off the ice. We wish Seren, Deena and Maggie, all the best as they move forward on to the next chapter of their life.

With a slight break in the hockey world, the ICE will step back on the ice in no time, as they look to build on their first year in the MFMHL.

Congratulations to the ICE players on an incredible season!

GO ICE GO!

PREVIEW: ICE vs. Westman

With the top 4 teams in the MFMHL advancing to the semi-finals, the 4th placed ICE will take on the 1st placed Wildcats as both teams aim to make the MFMHL Provincial Finals.

Due to the Canada Winter Games, the MFMHL playoffs have been put on a two week hold, as 10 players within the MFMHL are representing Team Manitoba.

Taking a look at our upcoming matchup, the Westman Wildcats flew to the top of the regular season standings with just 5 losses under their belt. In their first round matchup the Wildcats took on the Lightning, defeating them by a 3-1 series win.

Head to Head, the ICE and Wildcats competed 4 times within the regular season with the Wildcats ending the year, 4-0 vs the ICE, with 2 of those games decided in extra time.

Back in september, the ICE played their first regular season game against the Wildcats, falling to a score of 3-1. Yewdall would pick up the ICE's first regular season goal of the season.

A few weekends later, the ICE would travel to Hartney where they would see Westman jump out to a comanding 4-0 lead. Stewart would then steal the show in the third period, getting her first career Hat-trick. Just a little too late, the ICE would fall to the Wildcats by a score of 4-3.

Well into November, the ICE would make their final trip of the season to Hartney. J.Bird would get on the board first, putting the ICE up by 1. Shippam would stand tall in net, with the Wildcats first goal coming in the third period to tie it up. With regulation solving nothing, both teams were headed to OT for the first time in the Season. The Wildcats would find the back of the net first, giving them the 2-1 OT win.

With their fourth and final matchup coming in late December, the ICE would battle hard, with J.Bird once again finding the back of the net in the first period to put the team up by 1. Wanting to recreate the same outcame as their last matchup, the Wildcats would finally beat Baker in the third period to tie things up at 1. Once again heading into OT, it was the Wildcats who would prevail, as they would take the 2-1 OT win.

With the last 2 games of the season headed to overtime, and the last 3 games decided by just 1 goal, we are headed for an intense battle in the semi-finals.

The series is set to kick off on Wednesday, March 6th, as the ICE travel out to Hartney for a 7:30pm puck drop.

The ICE will return to Winnipeg on Saturday, March 9th, where they will take on the Wildcats at BellMTS Iceplex. Puck drop is set for 4:15pm. BRING THE NOISE!!

ICE Head to Semi-Finals!

Finishing 4th in the standings, the ICE headed into the first round of the playoffs, competing against the 5th placed Eastman Selects, better known as the defending Provincial Champions.

With a lot on the line, the ICE brought their game, defeating the Selects by a score of 5-1, 2-1 (OT), and 2-0 to win the best of 5 series 3-0.

The ICE will now have a 2 week break (Canada Games) before taking on their next opponent in the MFMHL Semi-Finals.

The first place Westman Wildcats have also clinched their spot to the Semis.

The ICE will have to wait till the other series wrap up (Chiefs(2) Vs Capitals(1)) / (Avros(2) Vs Hawks(2)), before determing who they will face, starting March 6th.
